The Difference Nobody Explains Properly
Both categories say "infrared" on the box. That word is doing an enormous amount of work, and it hides the only thing that matters here.
Red light therapy panels emit narrow bands of visible red light (typically 660nm) and near-infrared (typically 850nm). The mechanism you're buying is photobiomodulation: light at those wavelengths is absorbed by cytochrome c oxidase in the mitochondria, and research suggests that absorption changes cellular energy output in the tissue the light actually reaches. Hold onto that last phrase. It means millimetres of skin and shallow soft tissue. Not your whole body, and not your cardiovascular system. The dose is measured in irradiance (mW/cm²) at a stated distance, and that number is the only spec on the box worth arguing about.
An infrared sauna works on far-infrared, roughly 3,000nm and longer. At those wavelengths the energy is absorbed as heat at the skin surface and warms you the way any heat source does. No photobiomodulation is happening at 3,000nm. What you're buying is a passive heat stress: elevated core temperature, elevated heart rate, a lot of sweat. That's a real physiological event, and it's the same event a traditional sauna produces, just at a lower air temperature over a longer session.

Skin is the strongest case: research suggests red and near-infrared light influences collagen production and skin appearance, and that body of work is directly about devices like these rather than borrowed from a different modality. Localised joint and muscle soreness is the other reason people reach for one.
The practical arguments matter as much as the mechanism:
- Ten minutes, no recovery tax. You stand in front of it, you're done, you carry on with your day. No cool-down, no shower, no towel. Our view: that gap in friction is what decides whether a device survives past month three, and it's the single thing most buyers underweight.
