We know that not because Polar says so, but because when researchers want to test how accurate a ring or a watch is, the H10 is what they measure it against. A 2025 validation study of five consumer wearables used exactly that setup across 536 nights of sleep.

How HRV accuracy is actually measured

Heart rate variability is not a measure of your heart rate. It is a measure of the tiny differences in the gaps between consecutive beats, usually reported as rMSSD in milliseconds. If your beats arrive 900 ms, 940 ms and 910 ms apart, HRV is describing those 40 ms and 30 ms differences, not the roughly 65 beats per minute they average out to.

That distinction is the whole story of why accuracy is harder here than for heart rate. A device can be off by two beats per minute and still report a heart rate you would call correct. To get HRV right it has to place the timing of every individual beat to within a few milliseconds, and one misplaced beat can move rMSSD by more than the change you were hoping to detect.

Two technologies compete to do that:

Electrical (ECG). A chest strap sits over the ribs and picks up the electrical signal the heart muscle generates as it contracts. The R-wave in that signal is a sharp spike, so the timing between beats is easy to pin down. This is what a hospital ECG does, and Polar's own product page for the H10 puts it plainly: "When others want to validate the accuracy of their devices, they use Polar H10."

Optical (PPG). A ring or watch shines light into the skin and measures how much comes back as blood volume changes with each pulse. What it sees is a rounded wave arriving a fraction of a second after the electrical beat, and how rounded it is depends on skin tone, temperature, how tightly the device is worn, and whether you are moving. The device then has to infer where the beat "was". That inference is where HRV error creeps in.

There is a third factor people miss. The pulse wave itself has natural variability that the electrical signal does not, because blood takes a slightly different amount of time to travel to your finger on each beat. So even a perfect optical sensor would not produce an identical number to a chest strap. This is why moving from one device to another resets your baseline, and why comparing your Oura HRV to a friend's WHOOP HRV is meaningless.

What the validation studies found

Two independent studies do most of the useful work here, and reading them together is more informative than reading either alone.

Dial et al., Physiological Reports, 2025 (doi:10.14814/phy2.70527) measured five wearables against a Polar H10 reference across 536 nights of home sleep in 13 adults:

Miller et al., Sensors, 2022 (doi:10.3390/s22166317) compared six devices against ECG in a sleep laboratory with 53 adults. Their HRV results, as intraclass correlation and average error against ECG:

Notice that the two studies disagree about who wins. WHOOP came top in 2022 and Oura came top in 2025. Both used different generations of hardware, different reference standards and different processing, so the sensible conclusion is not "Oura beat WHOOP" but something more useful: brand rankings move between generations, and the only stable finding across both studies is the hierarchy of sensor placement. Chest straps are the reference. Rings do well overnight. Wrist watches are the weakest, and the wrist-worn Garmin in the 2022 study was poor enough that the authors said so in the paper.

One more finding worth carrying into your buying decision. The Miller study also found that the same devices which struggled with HRV handled heart rate easily, and that all six were valid for simply telling sleep from wake. Accuracy is metric-specific. A device can be excellent at one number on its screen and unreliable at the one next to it.


The best HRV monitors, ranked

1. Polar H10 — most accurate HRV reading you can buy

The H10 wins this category for a reason that is unusually easy to verify: it is the device the science uses. The 2025 Physiological Reports study did not test the H10 alongside the rings and watches. It tested the rings and watches against the H10. When a device is chosen as the yardstick, you no longer have to take the manufacturer's word for its accuracy.

The direct evidence is good too. Schaffarczyk and colleagues (Sensors, 2022) compared the H10 to a laboratory ECG in 25 people through an exhausting cycling ramp test. Correlations were 0.95 at rest before the test and above 0.93 through the exercise, dropping to 0.86 in the rest period afterwards, and the bias in RR intervals sat at roughly 1 ms or less. Their conclusion was that linear HRV from the H10 "correspond closely with measurements taken with a reference ECG" and can be recommended to practitioners.

What ownership teaches you that the spec sheet does not: the strap needs to be damp against the skin or the first two minutes of any reading are junk, and that single habit is the difference between the H10 being brilliant and it being frustrating. Users also consistently report the strap wearing out long before the sensor pod does, which is fine because Polar sells the strap separately. Battery is a CR2025 coin cell, not the CR2032 most people have in a drawer, and Polar explicitly warns that the wrong one can damage the unit.

The honest limitation is that nobody wants to sleep in a chest strap. The H10 does have onboard memory for one session up to 30 hours, so an overnight recording is technically possible, but in practice this is a device for a controlled morning reading or for training. If you want HRV collected while you sleep with zero effort, buy a ring as well or instead.

If the H10 answers "what is my HRV right now", the Oura Ring 4 answers "what was it every night for the last six months" without asking anything of you. On the 2025 data it does that better than any other consumer wearable with published numbers: a concordance of 0.99 against the H10 reference and a mean absolute error of 5.96 percent across 139 nights.

The finger turns out to be a much better place for an optical sensor than the wrist. The arteries are closer to the surface, there is less tissue in the way, and your hand is mostly still while you sleep. That is the mechanical reason rings beat watches in every study we found, rather than anything clever in Oura's algorithm.

Oura now sells two generations at once. The Ring 5 at ~$399 is the current model and the Ring 4 at ~$349 is still listed. We are ranking the Ring 4 above it deliberately, because the Ring 4 is the one with independent validation behind it and the Ring 5 has not been through that process yet. That will change, and when it does the newer ring will very likely test at least as well.

The membership is the sting. Without it the ring keeps recording but the Readiness, Sleep and Activity scores disappear behind the paywall, and new members get one free month rather than the free year several sites still report. Over three years the realistic total is about $559 for a Ring 4.

3. Garmin HRM 200 — the budget way to get an electrical reading

Garmin launched the HRM 200 as a straightforward chest strap that transmits real-time heart rate and HRV to Garmin watches, Edge computers, gym equipment and apps. At $79.99 on garmin.com it undercuts the H10 by $25 and works on exactly the same electrical principle, which means it starts from the same accuracy advantage over anything optical.

The caveat we have to be straight about: there is no independent validation study for the HRM 200 that we could find, which is the same standard we have applied to the rings further down this page. What it has is the physics and Garmin's long track record with chest straps. What it does not have is the H10's paper trail.

Practical differences that matter more than the price gap. The HRM 200 has a user-replaceable battery rated to around a year and a machine-washable strap in two sizes. It does not have onboard memory, so it cannot record a session on its own the way the H10 can, and its natural home is a Garmin ecosystem rather than a third-party HRV app.

4. WHOOP — best coaching around the number

WHOOP 4.0 measured a concordance of 0.94 and a mean absolute error of 8.17 percent for HRV in the 2025 study. That is behind Oura and comfortably usable. Worth knowing before you read too much into it: a WHOOP One membership ships WHOOP 5.0, and nobody has published an independent validation of that sensor yet, so the number above describes the previous generation. The wrinkle is that in the 2022 Sensors study, an older WHOOP 3.0 was the single best device of the six tested for HRV, with an intraclass correlation of 0.99 and an average underestimate of just 4.5 ms. A separate 2021 validation of WHOOP 2.0 by Bellenger and colleagues, in just six participants, put the HRV bias at 1.66 ± 1.80 percent but warned it "approached or exceeded" the smallest change worth caring about, which is a fair way of describing the limits of any optical device.

Read together, WHOOP is a good HRV sensor whose exact ranking against Oura depends on which study you pick. Where it clearly leads is what happens after the measurement. WHOOP takes HRV overnight during slow-wave sleep, turns it into a recovery percentage, and then argues with you about your training all day. If you want a system rather than a number, this is the one.

The business model remains the hard part. There is no way to buy the hardware outright, so stopping payment stops the data. Three years of WHOOP One is about $597.

The Helio Strap is a screenless WHOOP-shaped band that reports overnight HRV, sleep stages and a morning readiness score, and Amazfit states on its own product page that no subscription is required. At around $100 it costs less in total than five months of WHOOP.

There is no independent validation for it, and we are not going to pretend otherwise. What we can say is that it is worn in the same place, using the same class of optical sensor, as devices that have been validated, and that the arm position it also supports is the better of its two options. Users report the Zepp app's readiness logic being cruder than WHOOP's, which is the trade you are making for $500 less over three years.

On the Helio Strap Pro: Amazfit added one to its US store on 18 June 2026 at $199.99. For HRV purposes it does not change this entry. The Pro is a two-sensor kit rather than a newer band, pairing a Helio Core Motion HR for the arm or wrist with a Helio Core Motion Waist that clips at the waist and carries motion sensors instead of optical heart rate. Its published health specs list the same sleep heart rate variability, sleep staging, SpO2 and stress tracking as the $99.99 strap, on the same BioTracker 6.0 optical sensor, and it is subscription-free too. The extra money buys HYROX and hybrid-training movement analysis. It has no independent validation either.

6. RingConn Gen 2 — no-fee ring with the right physics

RingConn puts the sensor in the place that works, and charges nothing after purchase. Given that finger placement is the structural reason rings outperform watches for HRV, that is a real advantage over any wrist band at the same money.

What it does not have is a validation study. RingConn's marketing cites accuracy figures for heart rate and sleep that do not appear to trace back to peer-reviewed work, and we could not find independent polysomnography or ECG validation for it. That gap is why it sits below Oura here despite being cheaper and fee-free. Smart rings are currently the wearable category with the widest distance between marketing claims and published evidence.

The Ring AIR is subscription-free and gives you more raw numbers to look at than anything else in the ring category, which is genuinely appealing if you like reading your own data rather than being told what it means.

Ultrahuman has published a validation study on sleep heart rate, but it is the company's own work and it compares the ring to an FDA-cleared home sleep device and an Apple Watch rather than to ECG or laboratory polysomnography. A manufacturer study against another consumer device is not the same evidence as independent validation against a gold standard, and we score it accordingly. At ~$349 it is Oura Ring 4 money without Oura Ring 4's paper trail, which is the case against it.

The PACE 3 gives you a full GPS training watch, a daily recovery figure built on overnight HRV, and the entire COROS platform for one payment of $199. Nothing else on this list at this price includes a screen, GPS and no fee.

It is a wrist device, so it inherits the category's weakness for HRV, and there is no independent validation for COROS specifically. The sensible use is to let the watch handle training and trend, and pair it with a chest strap when you want the number to be right. It speaks standard Bluetooth, so a Polar H10 pairs with it directly.

Garmin's HRV Status and Body Battery are the most mature consumer implementation of HRV-led recovery, and they are free with the watch. Garmin also committed that everything free when Connect+ launched stays free, so the ~$249.99 remains a one-time cost for the metrics that matter here.

The caveat is the one the studies keep raising. In the 2022 Sensors work, the wrist-worn Forerunner 245 Music had an intraclass correlation of 0.24 for HRV, which the authors classed as poor, and underestimated by 22.4 ms on average. The Fenix 6 in the 2025 study did better at 0.87 but still finished behind both rings and WHOOP. Sensors have improved since the 245, and neither study tested the 165 itself, so treat this as a caution about wrist optical HRV in general rather than a verdict on this specific watch. The good news is that the fix is cheap: pair a Garmin strap and the watch uses the electrical signal instead.

Polar is currently running a sale that brings it to $169.99, stated as valid until 16 August 2026, against the $199.99 standing price.

The awkward fact is that Polar's optical devices have not tested especially well. The Vantage V managed an ICC of 0.65 in 2022, and the Grit X Pro was the weakest of five devices in the 2025 study at 0.82 concordance with a 16.32 percent mean error. Neither is the Loop, but the pattern across two studies and two different Polar watches is worth knowing before you buy the optical product from the company whose reputation was built on the electrical one.

The Charge 6 reports overnight HRV and a readiness score, and readiness no longer requires a paid tier: Google lists it among the features available free in the Google Health app when paired with a tracker. Google Health Premium at $9.99 a month or $99.99 a year buys the coaching layer on top.

It is last on this list for HRV specifically because it combines the weakest sensor placement with no independent validation and the least raw-data access of anything here. As a general fitness band at ~$159.95 it is good. As an HRV instrument it is the least convincing choice on this page.

The Apple Watch records HRV into the Health app and needs no subscription to do it. In the 2022 study the Series 6 landed at an ICC of 0.67 for HRV, which was mid-table, but with an important flaw the authors documented: the error was proportional, meaning the watch overestimated at low HRV values and underestimated at high ones. A device that compresses the range is a poor tool for spotting a genuine drop.

The bigger practical problem is the battery. Up to 18 hours means you are choosing between wearing it overnight and having it charged during the day, and HRV is an overnight measurement.

Buyer's guide: choosing an HRV monitor

Start with when you want to measure

This decision does more work than the brand choice. A deliberate morning reading taken lying down for a few minutes suits a chest strap, costs about $105 once, and gives you the most accurate number available. An automatic overnight average suits a ring or band, needs no discipline, and smooths out a lot of the noise a single reading contains. If you have the budget, an H10 for training plus a ring for sleep covers both properly and still costs less over three years than WHOOP alone.

Judge the sensor site before the brand

Across both studies, the ordering by placement was more stable than the ordering by brand. Chest reads best, finger next, wrist worst. That is anatomy rather than engineering, so it will still hold for models that have not been tested yet. When you see a new device with no validation data, its sensor position tells you more about its likely accuracy than its spec sheet does.

Treat unvalidated claims as unproven, not as false

Several good products on this page have no independent validation: the Helio Strap, RingConn, the COROS PACE 3, and the specific Garmin and Polar models we recommend. That does not mean they are inaccurate. It means nobody outside the company has checked. Ultrahuman's own study is a reasonable effort, but a manufacturer comparing its ring to an Apple Watch is not equivalent to a university comparing it to ECG. Price that uncertainty into what you pay.

Consistency beats accuracy for personal tracking

Because HRV has no universal normal, what you actually use is the distance between today and your own baseline. Pair it with a free app, take a five-minute reading lying down at the same time every morning, and you have better data than someone spending $597 over three years.

Then, if the morning discipline does not survive contact with real life, add an Oura Ring 4 for the overnight number. It has the strongest published agreement of any consumer wearable, and it collects data on nights when you would not have remembered to.

The one thing we would not do is buy a wrist device specifically for HRV. Every study we could find puts the wrist last, and the fix costs $80. If you already own a Garmin or a COROS, buy the strap rather than a new watch.
