The Luminar 5 leads because the part that faces the weather is not wood. An aerospace-grade aluminum shell wraps a Canadian red cedar interior, with thick double-pane black glass in front. The aluminum exterior does not need oiling or staining.
Fortune named it best outdoor sauna overall, and Garage Gym Reviews observed about 160°F in hands-on testing. Sun Home publishes a 170°F maximum, so read that as a ceiling.
Heat comes from five far-infrared panels and ten full-spectrum heaters. Sun Home says the cabin operates below 25°F and that cold air lengthens warm-up. An app over Wi-Fi lets you preheat it from the house.
It needs a dedicated 240V, 30-amp GFCI circuit and a level, load-bearing base. The cabin is 82.25 in wide, 51.75 in deep and 84 in high. It arrives palletized at the curb, and Sun Home says two or more people can assemble it in about half a day.
For qualifying residential orders placed on or after March 2, 2026, Sun Home describes the cabinetry and heater coverage as "limited lifetime," defined in its terms as up to seven years. The exterior cabin and controls have three-year coverage; lighting, glass doors, and audio have one-year coverage. Exclusions and service-cost limits apply. The warranty is void if the sauna sits within 5 feet of a water source, and Sun Home says the roof is not built to carry more than a foot of snow.

The Pinnacle was this guide's top pick until this update, and it is still where we would send most barrel buyers. It is a six-foot barrel in rustic red cedar, built in the USA, with a 6 kW Harvia stove included.
Garage Gym Reviews tested the closely related Morgan barrel, which it says may also be sold as the Pinnacle. Its testers reached about 190°F in roughly 30 minutes. That is an observation of the Morgan, not a direct Pinnacle test. A stone heater also gives steam when you pour water on the stones.
The interior is about 75 in across and 63 in long. Almost Heaven rates it for four people. Our editorial estimate is that three is more comfortable.
The stove is hardwired to a 240V, 30-amp circuit. Almost Heaven's warranty is limited lifetime on manufacturing defects, and Harvia covers heating elements for 1 year and other heater components for 5.

The Salem is the smallest barrel in our rankings. It is a six-foot-diameter cedar barrel four feet long, with an interior about 39 in deep.
The Salem package linked here lists a 6 kW Harvia KIP heater and was listed at $4,485, or from $4,036.50 on sale, on 6 October 2026. Almost Heaven's listing specifies a hardwired 240V, 30-amp circuit for the heater and a 110V, 15-amp plug-in connection for the light. Other sellers may bundle a different heater, including a 4.5 kW model; this comparison applies to the package named here.
We found no independent heat-up measurement for this exact Salem and heater configuration. Almost Heaven also sells a Salem kit with a 6 kW smart heater, which it says can reach up to 194°F in 45 to 60 minutes. That is a different package.
The warranty terms match the Pinnacle's: limited lifetime on manufacturing defects from Almost Heaven, with Harvia covering heating elements for 1 year and other heater components for 5.

Almost Heaven lists the Vienna's interior as 75¼ inches wide, 39¼ inches deep and 69¼ inches high. Its included 6 kW heater requires a hardwired 240V, 30-amp circuit; the light uses a separate 110V, 15-amp plug-in connection.
It costs about $700 more than the Salem at list price. Whether that is worth it depends on how exposed your doorway is. We found no independent heat-up measurement for the Vienna.

What to know before you buy
- Infrared or traditional. Infrared warms your body directly at lower air temperatures and has no stones. A traditional stove heats the air hotter and gives steam: Garage Gym Reviews reported about 190°F in the Morgan barrel it tested. Our Infrared vs Barrel Sauna guide compares both.
- Barrel or cabin. A barrel encloses less air than a square cabin on the same footprint, so there is less to heat. A cabin has flat walls and more usable bench space.
- Electric or wood. Electric means a switch and a wait. The Morgan barrel took roughly 30 minutes to reach about 190°F in Garage Gym Reviews' test. Wood means building a fire, a longer wait and ash to clear.
- What faces the weather. Follow the manufacturer's exterior-care schedule for your model, finish, climate, and exposure. An aluminum exterior does not need oiling or staining, though the sauna still needs routine care.
- The base. Every outdoor sauna needs a level, load-bearing surface that drains: a concrete pad, compacted gravel or a deck rated for the weight.
- Size up. If you think you want two seats, look at three or four. That is our editorial view: rated capacity assumes people sit close.
What it costs to install and run
- Electrical. The 240V circuit is the biggest variable, and the cost depends on the run from your panel. In one Garage Gym Reviews sauna review, the tester paid about $1,600 for a new 240V outlet. Get an electrician's quote before you order.
- Electricity example. A 6 kW heater running at full power for 60 minutes uses 6 kWh. At an illustrative rate of $0.18/kWh, that is $1.08, excluding lighting or other loads. Count warm-up time as well as bathing time. A thermostat may reduce heater runtime, and your actual electricity rate may differ. The EIA's outlook put the 2026 US residential average near 18 cents per kWh when we checked.
- Assembly. Barrel kits are DIY with two people, and Almost Heaven also sells professional installation.
